River Road Presbyterian Church is in the Presbytery of the James, part of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The Leadership of the local church consists of 18 Elders making up the Church Session as well as 12 Deacons who care for the Congregation and Trustees who oversee the financial operations of the church. The work of the church is overseen by designated Church Ministries: Christian Education, Congregational Care, Fellowship and Hospitality, Growth and Outreach, Leadership Development, Mission and Service, Personnel, Property, Stewardship and Finance, and Worship and Music.
We are fortunate to have a dedicated staff that works to carry out the important work of the church on a daily basis.
Assistant Director of Music/Contemporary Service
The Church has an immediate opening for an assistant music director for the music program and performers for our contemporary worship service.
- The part-time assistant (15 hrs./week) will have a love of praise music and primary responsibility for music of the contemporary worship service.
- This high energy individual will coordinate music selection with the pastor, compile video presentations, and provide and direct instrumental/choral contributions with weekly rehearsals.
Director of Childcare Center
River Road Presbyterian Childcare Center (RRPCC) is seeking a Director to begin immediately. This is a full-time, 12 month position. Our thriving Center offers care to children 6 weeks to 5 years old and is open mid - August to mid - June. The Director will work with parents, staff, and the Church to provide a loving, nurturing, learning environment. Our current Director will be assisting with the transition.
As the Director, you will:
- Be the face of the Center and set an upbeat and cheerful tone.
- Recruit, lead, supervise and act as a role model to our amazing teaching teams.
- Create positive relationships with families by serving as a responsive resource.
- Ensure that the staff interacts respectfully with children and others, demonstrating an inclusive environment.
- Maintain active waiting lists, enrollment, payroll, and address Center expenses.
- Ensure that the Center remains in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Support and implement the Church’s childcare philosophies, values, goals, and policies.

Dr. Raymond R. Roberts, Pastor/Head of Staff
Dr. Ray Roberts grew up in Farmington, Missouri. He received his B.A. in Economics from Westminster College, his M.Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, and his Ph.D. in History and Theology from Union/PSCE. In 1984, Ray was ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA). Ray serves as co-chair of the Advisory Committee for Social Witness Policy for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Ray and his wife, Sallie, met while he was at Columbia and she was at Agnes Scott College. They have two children, Harrison and Katherine, and one grandchild. Ray enjoys writing music, playing music, gardening, and exercising. Ray came to serve as Pastor/Head of Staff for RRPC in August of 2015.
Andrew P. Whitehead, Associate Pastor
Andrew Whitehead grew up primarily in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his Masters of Divinity from Union Presbyterian Seminary and previously earned a Masters in Theological Studies from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University and a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Presbyterian College. While at Union, Andrew completed his Clinical Pastoral Education at Greenville Memorial Hospital and his parish internship at Southminster Presbyterian Church. In these ministries, he was able to pursue his interests in pastoral care, intergenerational dialogue, and young adult ministry. He was awarded the Martha and Fred Stair Fellowship, a grant given in recognition of promise for pastoral ministry, by the Union faculty. Andrew and his wife, Olivia, enjoy volunteering at the SPCA, exploring Richmond, and cooking for friends at their home.
Leigh Anne Ring, Director of Christian Education
Leigh Anne Ring is the daughter of a Presbyterian Minister and an Elementary School Librarian. Born in Richmond, Virginia, she moved with her family to Greensboro, North Carolina and then to Charles Town, West Virginia. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Mary Baldwin College and her M.A. from Presbyterian School of Christian Education. Leigh Anne was certified by the PC(USA) in 2002. Being responsible for the full educational program of the church (children, youth, and adults) also compels her to stay busy in service to the Presbytery of the James where she has served on the Committee on Ministry, a Listening Team and Administrative Commission, and is a co-moderator for the Presbytery’s Christian Education Purpose Group. Leigh Anne and her husband, Jim, met while she was a student at PSCE and he was already employed by the Virginia Army National Guard. They have two children, Caroline and Joshua, and one dog, Max. Leigh Anne enjoys reading, sweet potato fries, and catching up with good friends.
Landry J. Duvall, Director of Music
Landry Duvall has served as the Director of Music at River Road Presbyterian Church since January of 2018, overseeing all aspects of musical programming and direction. He completed the Master of Music Degree in Church Music and Choral Conducting at Baylor University in 2015. There, he served as Graduate Assistant Conductor to the Baylor University Concert Choir and Baylor Bella Voce Select Women's Ensemble. In addition, he also assisted in lecture with undergraduate Choral Conducting and served as organist for the George W. Truett Theological Seminary. A native Tennessean, Mr. Duvall holds the Bachelor of Music Degree in Church Music and Organ Performance from Carson-Newman University near Knoxville, Tennessee. He has served churches in Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
Marianne P. Crean, Assistant Director of Music/Organist
Marianne Crean holds the Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ and Masters of Music Degree in Music Theory and Literature, both from Baylor University and is a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists. She has studied music in Vienna, Austria, and Siena, Italy and has performed in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, and Brazil. She has been Lower School Music Director at St. Christopher’s Schools in Richmond, Virginia since 1983, where she teaches general music, Orff Ensemble, and vocal and handbell choirs, and she is chapel accompanist. She has been Assistant Director of Music/Organist at River Road Presbyterian Church since 1997, directing the children’s music program as well as several choirs and handbell choirs, and she plays regularly for church services, weddings, and funerals. She teaches piano, enjoys her two rescue Westies, and does ballroom, Colonial, and Renaissance dancing with her husband, Mark.

Philip S. Tickle, Assistant Director of Music
Philip Tickle is a proud Richmond, Virginia native and lifelong musician. His love of music began as a chorister at All Saints Episcopal Church and only continued to grow throughout his schooling. After graduating from Trinity Episcopal School, Philip attended James Madison University to study Music Education. During his time at JMU, Philip performed in many ensembles, including the James Madison Chorale, the Marching Royal Dukes, and the Madison Singers. After earning his degree at JMU, Philip returned to Richmond and began teaching music at St. Michael's Episcopal School. He currently lives in Bon Air with his wife, Chelsea, and dog, Lily, and continues to teach at St. Michael's. Philip enjoys playing music, running, and traveling with his wife.
Susan G. Hockman, Director of Operations
Susan Hockman is a native Richmonder. She is a graduate of Mary Baldwin College and has been with River Road Presbyterian Church since 2001. Her responsibilities include directing the overall operation of the church to ensure efficient management of resources; developing and coordinating church communications, publicity, and marketing; maintaining the church membership; and managing church office staff as well as handling personnel/payroll needs. Susan and her husband, Bill, have two children, Hillary (along with husband, Lt. Col. William Brooks) and Jack, as well as a granddaughter. Susan enjoys reading, volunteering in the community, and spending time with family, especially her first grandchild.
Brenda E. Chavis, Administrative Assistant
Brenda E. Chavis is a Richmond native. She attended Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music and Virginia Commonwealth University. Brenda is an anointed choir director and praise and worship leader at St. Peter Baptist Church in Glen Allen, where she is a member. She shares her musical talents and her love for God with several church congregations in Richmond and surrounding areas. Brenda enjoys spending time with family and making jewelry. She is married to Rev. R. Alexander Chavis, and they have one daughter, Kellee Chanel. Brenda serves as RRPC's receptionist and handles support for staff, members, and volunteers as well as preparing the church bulletin each week.
Larry E. Coleman, Sexton
Larry is not only the longest tenured present member of our staff; he has worked for the church longer than anyone during its entire existence. In helping maintain the church as a suitable place for the Lord’s work to be done, Larry’s contributions are an extremely important and valuable part of the work and service of the church. He helps to maintain our buildings and grounds while also providing setup and takedown for the many events held at River Road Presbyterian. In his spare time, Larry enjoys spending time with family and gardening.
Jessie P. Cooke, Youth Intern
Jessie s a current Union student who is pursuing her Masters of Christian Education degree. She grew up in Hanover with her parents and two sisters. Jessie graduated from William and Mary in 2017, with a degree in Music. The W&M choir is where she met her husband, Jeb; they were married last November. She and Jeb enjoy ringing handbells with the James River Ringers, as well as spending time with their cat, Fraidy, and their dog, Beau.
Samuel A. Shields, Parish Intern
Sam Shields is a Final level student at Union Presbyterian Seminary, focusing his studies in Ethics, Pastoral Care, and Youth Ministry. Sam functioned as a Stephen Minister in the Bluefish cohort at Presbyterian College, serving as a spiritual presence from the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life. Sam was the Ukirk coordinator at Presbyterian College during the 2015-2016 academic year. Sam graduated from Presbyterian College in 2016, with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education. Sam served as the Camp Chaplain at Camp Hanover during the 2017 summer programming, as well as a Chaplain Intern at UVAHS in Charlottesville in the summer of 2018.
Melanie Davis, Director of Childcare Center
Melanie Davis is excited about being Director of the River Road Presbyterian Childcare Center. She has a background in Elementary Education and Administration. She earned a B.S. from Longwood and a M.Ed. from VCU in Administration and Supervision. She has taught Preschool, Kindergarten, 1st, 11th, and 12th grades and was an Assistant Principal for an elementary school (pre-kindergarten through 5th grades) in Henrico County. Melanie married her best friend, Danny, and they have four wonderful children; Cameron, Caden, Addisyn, and Cullen. They also have 4 fur-babies Cain (dog), River (dog), Georgie (cat), and Lightening (cat). She enjoys spending time with her family at the beach, traveling, and cheering on her family members in their various sports year round.

Christian Education Ministry
The Christian Education Ministry provides opportunities for members of all ages to encounter and study the Bible, to consider the basic tenets of the Christian faith, to improve their understanding of God, and to participate in activities that reinforce the ministry of the church. The current chair of the Christian Education Ministry is Dana Moore with vice-chair, Sherry Scudder.
Congregational Care Ministry
The Congregational Care Ministry consists of the Deacons of the church, twelve ordained men and women, who support and care for our members in time of need. Every member of River Road Presbyterian church has a personal Deacon who is in touch and available. The current head of the Diaconate is Kirsten Gregory.
Fellowship and Hospitality Ministry
The Fellowship and Hospitality Ministry is an integral part of our church family life. This hard-working group organizes Wednesday Night Suppers, Small Group Fellowship, Free Birds, the Annual Picnic, Celebration Sunday Brunch, and so much more. The current chair of the Fellowship and Hospitality Ministry is Brooke Hearn with vice-chair, Terry Byrne.
Growth and Outreach Ministry
The Growth and Outreach Ministry seeks to welcome all visitors to our church and inform them of the many opportunities and programs available. This ministry provides guidance in the process of becoming members of RRPC and helps new members to become assimilated into the life of the church. The current chair of the Growth and Outreach Ministry is T. J. Childress with vice-chair, Lee Ann McGhee.
Leadership Development Ministry
The Leadership Development Ministry is tasked with finding individuals to serve in leadership positions within the church. Regular Nominating Committee meetings are held to fill officer vacancies and also to match the right person with the many volunteer needs of the church. The current chair of the Leadership Development Ministry is Patricia A. Avery with vice-chair, Pratt Cherry.
Mission and Service Ministry
The Mission and Service Ministry directs mission work throughout our region and the world. Mission work is a priority in our congregation as we are guided by Christ to love our neighbors as ourselves. The current chair of the Mission and Service Ministry is Lesley Glotzl with vice-chair, Dan Murray.
The Personnel Ministry serves as the human resources team for church staff. It undertakes tasks such as coordinating staffing strategies and hiring efforts as well as providing individual staff evaluations and direction for personnel related issues as guided by the Session and Pastor/Head of Staff. Each member of the church staff is important and valued by this ministry. The current chair of the Personnel Ministry is Curt Manchester with vice-chair, Shel Thomas.
The Property Ministry is charged with the care and maintenance of our facilities and grounds. The current chair of the Property Ministry is Lee Branch with vice-chair, Cory Rayfield.
Stewardship and Finance Ministry
The Stewardship and Finance Ministry leads the annual stewardship campaign, develops and recommends yearly budgets to the Session, and monitors the current operating budget. This ministry is also involved in long-term planning as aligned with the vision of the church. The current chair of the Stewardship and Finance Ministry is Kristen Raper with vice-chair, Jim Cuthbertson.
Worship and Music Ministry
The Worship and Music Ministry provides and guides worship opportunities in the Reformed Tradition of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Our worship experiences inspire and encourage all to deepen and strengthen their faith and to share this faith with others. The current chair of the Worship and Music Ministry is Ellen Guinther with vice-chair, Jim Stewart.
